My journey as a helper, listener, and healer began as a young adult growing up in South Texas. I have always been intrigued by the why behind people's decision making, their thoughts about themselves, and how they arrived at their current way of being. From a young age, I was acutely aware of injustices faced by those in my communities and I made it a goal of mine to strive for “equality" for all. It was not until I advanced in my graduate education as a therapist and traversed the country from San Antonio to Atlanta, and finally back to Dallas, Texas where I began to awaken to the real issue impacting the mental health of my clients and underrepresented populations everywhere: the lack of equity in access to resources, experiences of oppression, and availability of opportunity. I also began to awaken to, and celebrate, what makes me thrive professionally and personally: traveling to new places, spending time in nature, laughing with friends and loved ones who know me well, and cuddling/playing/dancing/doing all of the things with my dogs!
I earned my Doctorate of Psychology at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas in Counseling Psychology with a focus on providing strengths-based therapies for underserved communities, including families, young adults, and children. I then completed an internship and fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia working with university students from a social justice and health psychology approach. As a Latinx/White woman and psychologist, I ground my therapy practice in social justice, feminist, and multicultural perspectives and values. I hold great care and respect for each individual’s lived experience which may be rooted in family-of-origin influences, aspects of their cultural background, sexual and gender identity exploration, and experiences of marginalization and oppression. I prioritize affirmation of these experiences, and guidance towards authentic living.
By using an integrative approach ranging from cognitive-behavioral, acceptance and commitment, dialectic-behavioral, and solution-focused techniques and therapies, I collaborate with clients to identify goals that align with their preferred and authentic ways of being. I believe in the emotional healing that comes from engaging in deep exploration and meaning making, as well as providing my clients with tools and actionable steps that can help them progress through self-development and towards desired change. My clients have expressed feeling truly connected to themselves in our sessions, as they are able to share openly about their experiences, worries, and emotions in a non-judgmental and empowering space.
